We communicate in multiple/multimodal ways, such as spoken words, written messages that can be sent via email or text messages, gestures, facial expressions, etc. For the most part, we depend on more than one way to communicate our message. For example, if we are unable to speak on the phone, we will send a text message to communicate. We will use effective communication methods that are suitable for that moment.
Children with communication disorders have a difficult time to, effectively, express their thoughts. When children find it difficult to use spoken words, they usually rely on multimodal communication such as using gestures, facial expressions, and/or Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC). Multimodal Communication Speech Clinic, Inc. supports and encourages the use of multimodal communication and our goal is for our clients to become autonomous communicators.
